Inside Kat’s 30th Birthday Party: A Y2K Fever Dream

This is what happens when a client says “go big”: IV bag cocktails, pug-shaped butter molds, and a three-course menu that transported her guests back to the 2000s.

Kat wanted a Y2K birthday. Not the Pinterest version… the real thing! Low-rise denim, flip phones, and a mood that made her feel like a real-life Bratz doll. So, we didn't just decorate around a theme; we built a full three-course dinner that lived inside it.

Course One: Terrarium Garden Salad

Starters were half salad, half science fair. Baby gem lettuce and edible flowers were layered on a bed of lentil "soil" and placed in individual glass terrariums. To top it off, servers came around with miniature pink watering cans, pouring lime shallot vinaigrette over top right at the table.

Course Two: Fishing for Shrimp

A meal and an activity wrapped up in one! We filled mini pink pools with chilled lemon water and nasturtiums floating on top as “lily pads”. Guests fished for their own shrimp with tiny pink fishing nets, then dressed them with clarified cocktail gel, black garlic oil, avocado foam, crushed spiced peanuts, and Mexican mint marigold. This is the one people are still talking about!

Course Three: Bavette Under Glass + Pug Butter

The bavette was served smoked and hidden under a cloche, opened tableside. Alongside it: family-style mashed potatoes served in a pink glass bowl, topped with a butter mold shaped like a pug! Guests built their own plate from a lineup of pink peppercorn bacon lardons, crawfish gravy, corn salsa with EVOO pearls, and Anaheim chili ash.

Dessert: Mini Cupcake Microphones

To close out the meal, servers passed around gluten-free chocolate sourdough cupcakes shaped like microphones, filled with bubblegum pink cremeux and topped with salted candy Frito popcorn. Each guest took their turn at the mic for a birthday toast before digging in.

The Bar

Even the drinks matched the Y2K vibe:

  • Brat Bin Cocktails –vodka, vanilla syrup, passionfruit, and lemon, served in a desktop-sized trash can with a pair of swirly straw glasses.

  • Emotional Support Fish– blanco tequila, coconut water, pineapple, and glowing ice.

  • The Pest Control Spritz – watermelon juice, simple, lemon juice, rose water, soda, and basil spritz was served from an actual spray bottle.

  • Glitter Beer – beer with a much-needed glitter upgrade, served in IV bags.

Even the basics got the Y2K treatment. Wine was poured from pink ketchup bottles, and every place setting got its own IV bag detail card, labeled like a hospital chart… because why not!
